Effectiveness of Prolonged Use of Soft Contact Lenses on Eye Health: A Review of Complications and Preventive Care

Contact lens, Microbial Keratitis, ComplicationsAbstract
Prolonged use of soft contact lenses (SCLs), including continuous wear during sleep, is a common practice in vision correction and offers significant aesthetic and practical benefits. However, their long-term effectiveness and safety are intrinsically associated with an increased risk of ocular complications, ranging from mild discomfort to clinically more serious conditions. The main concern lies in the reduced oxygen supply (hypoxia) to the cornea, even with the most modern silicone hydrogel lenses, which have greater permeability. Strict adherence to hygiene practices and professional recommendations is the most crucial factor in mitigating risks. In conclusion, the safety of prolonged use of soft contact lenses is a balance between visual benefits and the increased risk of complications.
